Rather than forcing additional concrete or pavers into a tight footprint, the Jax Outdoor Solutions team approached the design strategically—working outward from the pool deck to maximize function while remaining fully compliant with local regulations.
A Balanced Approach: Turf, Retaining Walls, and Drainage
The solution centered on introducing a raised turf area supported by a continuous retaining wall along the perimeter. This design accomplished several objectives at once:
- Created additional walkable, usable space without adding impermeable hardscape
- Improved site drainage by directing water away from the pool deck and toward designated drainage zones
- Maintained safe elevation transitions, limiting step-downs to prevent trip hazards

Underground drainage systems were integrated into planting beds to efficiently move water away from the living areas while protecting the pool deck and surrounding structures. Elevation changes were carefully managed to ensure water continued to pitch toward the rear of the property without compromising accessibility or safety.
Thoughtful Planting and Low-Maintenance Finishes

Along the property’s fence line, pine straw beds were intentionally chosen over stone to avoid long-term maintenance issues caused by falling debris from nearby trees.
The addition of artificial turf proved especially effective in this environment.
