Jax Outdoor Solutions recently completed a full back- and side-yard landscape design and installation for a residential client in Atlantic Beach, transforming a challenging sloped property into a functional, family-friendly outdoor living environment.
Addressing the Site Challenges
The property’s primary challenge was a steep grade leading directly from the rear patio down toward the lake, leaving little usable space for recreation or entertaining. Working closely with the homeowner’s original vision, the Jax Outdoor Solutions design team refined the concept to improve safety, usability, and long-term enjoyment.
A new retaining wall was installed along the pond edge, and the yard was backfilled with additional soil to raise the overall elevation. This created a level, open lawn area ideal for children’s play and everyday use, while maintaining proper drainage and stability along the water’s edge.
Thoughtful Design & Materials
Once the elevation was corrected, the backyard was completed with pet-friendly artificial turf to provide a durable, low-maintenance surface that stays green year-round. Along the side yard, a stepping-stone walkway guides movement from the gate to the backyard, creating a welcoming and cohesive transition through the space.
The extended patio was resurfaced with an angled-pattern travertine finish, adding texture, visual interest, and durability while elevating the overall outdoor living experience.
Tropical Plant Palette
To complement the coastal setting, the design incorporates a lush tropical aesthetic using plants well-suited for Northeast Florida, including:
- Birds of Paradise
- Hibiscus
- Cardboard Palm
- Pygmy Date Palm
- Muhly Grass
- Clusia
- Blue Daze
- Foxtail Ferns
Additional plantings such as podocarpus were strategically placed to screen mechanical equipment, while existing mature queen palms were preserved to maintain the property’s established canopy. Accent plantings, including yucca and Robellini palms, reinforce the tropical theme and frame views across the newly opened backyard.
